Pawley's Island is a small town located 70 miles north of Charleston and just 25 miles south of Myrtle Beach. Pawley’s Island lives up to its slogan as being “Arrogantly Shabby”. This laid back seaside town has all of the shabby charm of a 1700 plantation home, while upscale golf courses and restaurants add a touch of refinement to the area. Pawley’s Island is a barrier island less than four miles long. Two short causeways are the only linkage from Pawley’s Island to the mainland. If you’re staying at a Defender Resort, simply use the public beach access located at the south end of the island.

The Pawley's Island vibe is anything but stuffy. Kayaking, canoeing, biking and boating are all popular pastimes on the island. On Pawley's Island no one is in a rush. In fact, the island-wide speed limit is only 25 mph. So if you want to find an escape from the hustle and bustle of Myrtle Beach, Pawley’s Island may be the perfect place for you.

While you'll definitely want to travel onto the island, Pawley's Island has a mainland area with one-of-a-kind stores and restaurants located directly off of Highway 17. The Hammock Shops are a collection of stores on the mainland that sell hammocks, jewelry and souvenirs to tourists and residents alike.
